James Croft commented on Meira Levinson's blog post What can normative theory and empirical practice learn from one another?
"Interesting questions. I am particularly intrigued by Andrew's comment below. I am not convinced of the viability of "dividing the domains" of the empirical and the normative, since it seems to me that every act of research embodies…"

What can normative theory and empirical practice learn from one another?

I recently posted on the Announcements page an invitation for Cambridge-area CMEI members to join me in a new project on "Justice in Schools" that intentionally creates a two-way street between normative theory (i.e., principles about what the right/moral/ethical thing is to do) and empirical practice (i.e. what actually happens in the world). As I explain there, I think that educators would be helped by…See More

Andrew Scott Conning commented on Meira Levinson's blog post What can normative theory and empirical practice learn from one another?
"I am delighted that Meira, Brendan, and others are starting this conversation here at HGSE, and am excited to hear what people from outside HGSE might be able to contribute to this discussion via this website. The reason for my enthusiasm is that I…"

Brendan Randall commented on Meira Levinson's blog post What can normative theory and empirical practice learn from one another?
"I think there is a market for this form of research, which reflects the growth (at least in some circles) of interdisciplinary study. It represents an uphill battle, however, given the disciplinary structure of modern research universities.…"

Meira Levinson left a comment for Aaron Haddock
"Welcome to CMEI, Aaron! Our group's expertise tends to veer a little older: middle and high school level, rather than elementary. But there are a number of HGSE students (and CMEI members) who were/are elementary teachers who have an interest…"

Sand Art and Civic Narrative: An Extraordinary YouTube Video

Check out this 8 min video of a teenager telling the history of Ukraine through a wordless, dynamic sand art performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOMgDbcA84A. I realize this is a bizarre description -- you have to see it to understand it -- but it is a stunning feat both of visual artistry and of civic storytelling. As soon as I saw it, I of course thought of our colloquium theme for the year. I'm curious what others think!

Meira Levinson replied to CMEI's discussion Summer Institute of Civics Studies at Tufts: A Provocative Reflection by James Croft (D2, HDE)
"Well put, James! I see the important issues you are raising as being ones that are intentionally at a far remove from the day-to-day world of K-12 teaching. I didn't read you as advocating that all teachers, let alone all students or all…"
